Time Capsule

Last Saturday night Kent and I went to the movie Knowing starring Nicholas Cage. I won't give away any of the details about the movie except to describe the opening scene...it is the year 1959 and a brand new elementary school has opened it's doors. To celebrate the opening of the school, the children are filling a time capsule with their own art work to be opened by the students who will attend the school 50 years later...

It was a fairly decent movie, although the ending was pretty wierd. But it got me thinking about time capsules. What would I place in a time capsule to be opened 50 years in the future? I asked each member of my family that question. What would they want to be reminded about in 50 years of their lives today?

Here are our answers...
Kent: The 2008-2009 CHHS basketball program, a stop watch, a coaching whistle, and a picture of my wife.

Rachel: A lacrosse ball, my report card that came out today, the spring choir concert program, my driving permit, and my David Archuleta concert ticket stub.

Braden: A soccer ball, a basketball, my track shoes and a guitar pick.

Stefanie: A picture of my puppy Holly, a painting I made at school and a Jonas Brothers CD.

Me: A family picture, a printout of my blog, a copy of my school lesson plans, and my latest teaching evaluation form.

Blogiversary

It's hard for me to believe, but the end of this month marks a year since I started this blog. When I first heard about blogs I wasn't too impressed. To me they seemed extremely self promoting and I wanted nothing to do with them. But as I started regularly peeking in on a few blogs of friends and family I became intrigued. I was fascinated to find that people would open up and share their lives with whoever was interested enough to check in. I followed one link after another and realized that this was a much bigger trend than I ever imagined it to be. I wondered if it was something I could do and benefit from. Then, one year ago I hesitatingly decided to give it a try. It is not a decision I made lightly, and despite the precious time it requires, it was the right decision for me. This is my 87th posting and I love this new activity in my life! Now as I look back I see many joys and blessings that have come from it. In this year of blogging I have documented my life and the lives of my husband and kids, renewed friendships, connected more with extended family, tried a few new recipes, projects and activities, and improved my writing and photography skills. It's all been worth it, and I plan to continue for a long time to come. Happy blogiversary to me!

Monday Morning Musings

*This weekend Stefanie and I took a walk around the yard looking for signs of spring. Yay! We found buds and blossoms popping out everywhere we looked. Here is a glimpse...


*Yesterday we hosted a family get-together in honor of our nephew & cousin Trevor, the first missionary grandchild from the Smith side of the family. He recently got his mission call to Uruguay and we couldn't be prouder of him. He and his sister Sarah are from South Dakota, both attending BYU. The semester will end in a few weeks and they'll both head home, then Trevor will leave a few weeks after that for the MTC in Argentina. Two of Kent's brothers and their families also came to our home for a fun Sunday afternoon of food and family, it was great. We wish all the best to Trevor as he serves the Lord for the next two years, our prayers will certainly go with him. We love you Trevor!


*As we were sitting around chatting after dinner yesterday, my sister-in-law Heidi mentioned that we have quite a zoo at our house with all the pets we've acquired. Holly our puppy, Snowball our tom cat, Kiwi and Zazu our parakeets, and five brightly colored fish who've been swimming around in our aquarium for about two years now. We like the way our pets amuse us and liven up the household.

Temple Open House

We took our girls to the Draper temple open house yesterday, it was beautiful. We hurried home from school and arrived there as soon as we could, but we sure didn't beat any crowds...it was packed! We first were directed to a local church building where we waited in the cultural hall for about an hour before we were taken to a smaller room to watch a video. Then we boarded a bus that took us up steep winding roads to the temple. It was stunning, and worth the wait.

The exterior of the temple is made of white granite, it is truly an impressive sight up on the hill overlooking the valley. But the inside is even more incredible.

Of course they won't let you take pictures inside the temple, I exported these from dnews.com and created this collage. I especially loved the furnishings and art work all throughout the temple, including the stained glass windows. The murals in the ordinance rooms are amazing, I could spend an hour in each room just looking at all the details. Kent asked one of the ushers where they got all the paintings, she said several of them were original pieces created specifically for the Draper temple. Stefanie was intrigued by the enormous chandeleir in the celestial room and the "cows" under the baptismal font. Rachel loved the bride's dressing room.

I'm so grateful for temples and that I was able to take my girls so they could see what this temple looks like on the inside. Braden had soccer practice so he wasn't with us, but he went with his young men group a couple of weeks ago, I'm glad he was able to see it too. Now we're looking forward to the dedication in a couple of weeks--where did I put those white hankies?

Spring Forward

I am not a fan of daylight savings time. Especially when church begins at 9:00 a.m. the next morning. And you've been out late the night before. And you have teenage children who are slow and grumpy in the morning.   And you are the organist of the ward so you HAVE to be on time or everyone will see you running red-faced up to the organ just barely before the meeting starts. No, I'm definitely not a fan of daylight savings time.

Mixed Emotions

PROUD: of the effort the Copper Hills basketball team put into their state playoff game against Davis High School at the E-Center this morning. They were a class act, and put their hearts and souls into every second. And might I add...Coach Smith looked pretty darn sharp down there on the sidelines in his shirt and tie.

DISAPPOINTED: that we lost the game. With ten seconds left we were down by three points, and we had the ball. The game was that close. We were down by two at halftime, and up by as much as six points in the fourth quarter. The lead kept changing back and forth, but we just couldn't quite hang on to win. It was heartbreaking to see the dejected expressions and tears on the boys' faces as they walked off the court.

ANGRY: at one of the lousy referees who made a couple of bad calls against us. YOU IDIOT!!

GRATEFUL: to all the great friends, family and fans who were so amazingly supportive all season long. We had a huge, loud, excited crowd there at the E-Center today, proudly wearing Copper Hills blue and green, it was awesome.

HOPEFUL: that the boys will remember today and this entire season as a positive experience all their lives. Also, since most of the starters on the team are juniors this year, next year is looking pretty promising...

RELIEVED: that the official basketball season is over for another year and I get my husband back...at least until spring and summer tournaments begin. Welcome home, honey!
